The WAYJO Northern Corridor Training Band (WAYJO NC) assists in the development of young musicians who have an interest in playing big band jazz. This ensemble also focuses on the growth it’s members through developing deeper musical understanding, leadership, and comradery.
About the Northern Corridor Training Band
WAYJO NC is a training band for high school students wishing to extend themselves and learn how to read and play various styles of big band jazz music, including blues, swing and fusion. Every year we are excited to welcome new and returning students to the program.
Rehearsals will be in big band format and involve learning phrasing, articulation, and other basic improvisational techniques. Alongside regular rehearsals will be masterclasses, performance opportunities, demonstrations, and mentoring from current members, WAAPA students and staff, plus experienced WAYJO Alumni.
Eligibility: School students Years 8* to 12 with at least 3 years of experience on their instruments – no audition required.
*Students under the age of 13 will be considered if they are of an acceptable standard.
Due to the popularity of this program, in 2027 we will have limited spots available for each instrument: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, piano, vocals and drums.

Rehearsals are held on a Tuesday night at St Stephen’s Music Department – Duncraig Campus, 100 Doveridge Drive, Duncraig WA beginning on Tuesday, 10 February 2026. Performances and special events will be announced in March 2026.
2027 Registrations
Registrations for 2027 will be open between 7 Dec 2026 to 29 Jan 2027, or until places are filled (30 available).
The fee for the year long program is: $420 (+ booking fee) and are non-refundable after rehearsals commence. Scholarships and payment plans are available to those in need upon request.
Enrolment forms will be available on 7 December.
Please note that your registration is not complete until payment is made through Humanitix. After payment has been made you MUST return to the Google Form to submit your registration. If there are no positions available for your instrument, please exit the Humanitix link and return to the Google form. Submit the form, and we will keep you informed if a position becomes available.
