WA Youth Jazz Orchestra is widely regarded as Australia’s leading youth jazz orchestra. For more than 30 years, we have been providing inspiration and opportunity to outstanding young jazz musicians from Western Australia and beyond.

In 2017, WAYJO Members:

  • Performed sell-out shows alongside internationally-acclaimed guest artists Adrian Kelly, Mat Jodrell and Ed Partyka at His Majesty’s Theatre;
  • Participated in the 2017 Composer-in-Residence Program at the Perth International Jazz Festival with Rafael Jerjen (Switzerland), premiering new work by Associate Composer- in-Residence Sam Hadlow (WAYJO WNO);
  • Performed sell-out shows with The Premiss Collective at the FringeWorld Festival and Hidden Treasures, Fremantle – a powerful cross-genre collaboration with Perth’s local hip-hop artists;
  • Performed with the Evan Sherman Big Band at the Perth International Arts Festival;
  • Toured regionally across Western Australia to Busselton, Margaret River, Albany, Denmark and Bunbury;
  • Performed at the Celebrate WA Day Festival concert, Elizabeth Quay;
  • Toured internationally to Japan as part of our Music Exchange program with Showa University, and to the USA as part of Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony program;
  • Performed and conducted workshops for the ‘Act-Belong-Commit Education Program’ visiting metropolitan, outer-metropolitan and regional schools;
  • Presented the debut ‘Jazz for Juniors’ program, introducing 4-7 year olds to jazz music and instruments at His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth;
  • Performed for sizeable audiences at venues, festivals, community and corporate events across Perth.

All positions in WA Youth Jazz Orchestra are vacated at the end of each year. A total of fifty-four places are available within the three orchestras – the Monday Night Orchestra, Tuesday Night Orchestra, Wednesday Night Orchestra. Each orchestra consisting of the following instrumentation:

Audition Dates: Auditions are 15 minutes in duration and allocated on a first come first served basis – so register early!

Audition Cost: $27.12 per audition.

Audition Registration Process:

  1. Visit for what you need to know about auditioning for the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra;
  2. Read the 2018 WAYJO Audition Booklet (plus 2018 WAYJO Video Audition Guidelines if necessary) – even if you have auditioned previously. Auditions are open for musicians aged 14-25 (28 if in full-time study) in 2018;
  3. Complete the online Live Audition Form [booked out] or Video Audition Form [now closed] and use the Eventbrite link in that form to pay and confirm your audition date/time;
  4. Check your inbox for your Eventbrite Booking Confirmation PDF – email or call WAYJO on (08) 9471 1950 during business hours if you have any problems or questions!
