2023 WAYJO Band Auditions Open
2023 WAYJO Band Audition registrations open Monday 19 September for people wishing to participate in the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) in the coming year. Musicians interested in learning jazz performance and improvised big band music, aged 14-25 and able to rehearse in Perth during 2023, are encouraged to apply.
Positions in each of the three big bands are auditioned every year, offering the opportunity to perform at some of Perth’s best venues, work with top band leaders and touring guest artists, plus travel regionally, nationally and internationally. WAYJO also annually commissions original big band works, trains band leaders, and runs pathway educational programs.
A total of fifty-four places are available within three big bands – the MinterEllison Monday, St John of God Health Care Tuesday, and WAYJO Wednesday Night Orchestras. All three 18-piece bands each audition for Saxophones (2x Alto, 2x Tenor & 1x Baritone), 4x Trumpets, Trombones (3x Tenor & 1x Bass), 1x Guitar, 1x Bass, 1x Piano, 1x Drum Kit, plus 1x Vocalist.
Running the first two weekends in December, auditions are allocated on a first come first served basis. Aspiring band members are encouraged to register early, as places sold out in previous years.
Auditions and band rehearsals are held at WAYJO’s rehearsal studio in the historic Maylands Hall, located corner Eighth Avenue and Guildford Road. Musicians who cannot attend the December dates can apply through video audition.

2022 WAYJO Act Belong Commit Band Auditions Open
The 2022 WAYJO Act Belong Commit Band Auditions are now open for people wishing to participate in the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) this coming year.
Musicians interested in learning jazz performance and improvised big band music, aged 14-25 (28 if in full-time study) and able to rehearse in Perth during 2022, are encouraged to apply.
Barring last year, where members were offered continuation due to the COVD pandemic disruption to events and rehearsing, all performer positions are vacated and auditioned annually.
A total of fifty-four places are available within three big bands – the MinterEllison Monday, plus Tuesday and Wednesday Night Orchestras. All three 18-piece bands are each auditioning for Saxophones (2x Alto, 2x Tenor & 1x Baritone), 4x Trumpets, Trombones (3x Tenor & 1x Bass), 1x Guitar, 1x Bass, 1x Piano, 1x Drum Kit, plus 1x Vocalist.

Introducing WAYJO Club
The West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) will not be holding band auditions for 2021. COVID-19 caused the loss of rehearsal and performance opportunities through most of 2020, so WAYJO has offered 2020 band members continuation into 2021.
Instead we welcome to WAYJO Club, an exciting new opportunity for aspiring instrumentalists and vocalists, aged 12-18 years during 2021, to learn about and participate in jazz music making with WAYJO in a social and inclusive setting.
There will be NO AUDITION required to take part, WAYJO Club is open to all young musicians with a basic understanding of music.
WAYJO Club is a program that will give you access to networks, resources, content, open rehearsals and jazz day-camps. These will be delivered March-June & August-November as a combination of both online and in-person sessions (pandemic advisories permitting).
The year is divided into two separate semester programs – so you can choose to participate for a single semester, or book the full year in advance to enjoy a discount;

WAYJO CLUB FEES
- Single Semester: $150 (plus $9.34 booking fee)
- Full Year: $250 (plus $15.93 booking fee)
WAYJO Club semester 1 and full-year registrations open 9.00am Wednesday 18 November 2020, and close 5.00pm Monday 15 February 2021 – if not filled prior. Participants are limited to 50 per semester.

Audition applications for 2018 West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) big bands are now open and online at wayjo.com/get-involved/audition, closing midnight Friday 10 November, 2017 - if not filled prior.
WAYJO is open to musicians 14-25 years of age (up to 28 in full-time study) and performs a range of jazz styles from trad, classic through to modern, including commissioned big band works by young WA composers.
All band positions are auditioned annually, offering members the opportunity to perform at some of Perth's best venues, and travel regionally, nationally and internationally with top band leaders and touring guest artists.
A total of fifty-four places are available within three bands – the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Night Orchestras. Each orchestra auditions for the following instrumentation; • Alto Saxophone (2) • Tenor Saxophone (2) • Baritone Saxophone (1) • Trumpet (4) • Trombone (3) • Bass Trombone (1) • Guitar (1) • Double Bass (1) • Piano (1) • Drums (1) • Vocals (1).
WAYJO’s 2018 Auditions will be held at the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra rehearsal studio – Maylands Town Hall - 192 Guildford Road (cnr Eighth Ave), Maylands WA. The rehearsal studio is located close to public transport, with parking available along Eighth Avenue.
