Ricki MaletMonday Night Orchestra Musical Director, Ricki Mallet

“Jazz Under The Stars is the final performance for the WAYJO MinterElison Monday Night Orchestra (MNO). This is a great opportunity to present pieces of music from the concerts throughout of the year. This year MNO played a bunch of great shows from the New Orleans Concert at the start of the year, featuring New York Trombonist Mariel Bildsten, to playing some down and dirty blues Chicago style. In addition to reprising this repertoire we will also be performing a few new pieces featuring some Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald & Basie classics.

After a year of sold out performances, an extremely rewarding regional tour mixing with local communities and schools, and rehearsing every week, the band is fired up and ready for this final concert. Come down and see what WAYJO’s youngest band can do!”

Marty Pervan

Tuesday Night Orchestra Musical Director, Marty Pervan

"2019 has seen TNO performing a diverse variety of big band music sourced form the American big band tradition, including, Las Vegas/cabaret, Motown and Afro-Cuban styles as well as music from the great American songbook - jazz standards that have become an indelible part of the big band idiom.

Coming in hot off the back of an extremely successful regional tour, the TNO Quarry concert set will be a true journey through all of these sub-genre's and more. We are really looking forward to ripping up the stage with a bit of something for everyone that's bound to leave you smiling and tapping your feet."

Dr Mace Francis

Wednesday Night Orchestra Musical Director, and WAYJO Artistic Director, Dr Mace Francis

"2019 has been a landmark season for WAYJO, celebrating the birthplace of the music we love in 'An American Jazz Story'.

Each month our band members took audiences on a sonic journey to cities that contributed to musical styles that have not only influenced jazz, but also modern music.

We welcomed two very special guests from New York City, saxophonist Dick Oatts (of The Village Vanguard) and trombonist Mariel Bildsten (Evan Sherman Big Band) that workshopped our bands intensely, evoking the very best performances from each musician.

Diving deep and crafting their understanding of these historically significant works, WAYJO has already performed to over 8,000 ticketed attendees this season, experiencing higher attendance rates over the previous year.

I hope you'll come along to celebrate our final show for the 2019 season, and experience these rising stars of jazz and contemporary music before they’re snapped up interstate and overseas!"

Jazz at The Maj: Everybody Needs Somebody to Love - Chicago Blues Jazz

King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong. Just some of the artists who made their names in Chicago, a city synonymous with jazz, swing and blues.

WAYJO brings together the jazz and blues tradition across these two concerts, featuring powerful soul, big band swing, and bass grooves both familiar and infectious.

Who knows, we may even drop some tunes by a couple of brothers who were on a mission from God.

WAYJO Announces New Partnership with MinterEllison

The WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) announces an exciting new partnership with one of the Asia-Pacific’s premier lay firms, MinterEllison.

MinterEllison are the naming rights partners for the WAYJO Monday Night Orchestra, henceforth referred to as the WAYJO MinterEllison Monday Night Orchestra.

WAYJO General Manager Simon Keen is positive about the benefits the partnership will bring to both parties.

“Partnering with MinterEllison, a law firm with a strong reputation for excellence, showcases the value we place in our orchestra members, and will contribute significantly towards our mission of offering outstanding opportunities to young musicians. The Monday Night Orchestra reaches audiences in excess of 3,000 people annually, and is a first step for many of our members as they hone their skills in big band jazz. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with MinterEllison over the coming years, and thank them wholeheartedly for their support”.

WAYJO are also seeking naming rights partners for their Tuesday and Wednesday Night Orchestras.

In 2018, WAYJO played to 8,000 people at ticketed performances and reached over 30,000 people through all of the company’s programs. 2019 has seen WAYJO sell out their first 5 concerts as part of the Jazz at The Maj season, embark on a regional tour through the South West of WA, visit Japan and Showa University of Music, and have many more performances coming up throughout the year.

For further WAYJO partnership enquiries, please contact General Manager Simon Keen on +61 8 9471 1950.

Jazz at The Maj: Dixieland Stomp - New Orleans Jazz featuring Mariel Bildsten (USA)

WAYJO brings the birthplace of jazz together with the big band sound. Jazz made for dancing, stomping your feet and having a good time. That’s what New Orleans jazz is all about.

We welcome bandleader and trombonist Mariel Bildsten, direct from the USA, to play and lead the Monday Night Orchestra. Recently seen in Perth with the Evan Sherman Big Band (Perth Festival, 2017), Mariel brings her experience of playing with jazz greats including Wycliffe Gordon, Dee Dee Bridgewater and more to Downstairs at The Maj.

The sound of New Orleans comes to Perth in May, so pack your dancing shoes and prepare to swing.

Mariel Bildsten appears thanks to funding provided by the United States Government and the Minderoo Foundation

* WAYJO is also offering a Concert-Workshop for schools Fri 3 May, 3pm. Booking is essential, with a maximum of 100 attendees per workshop. Tickets for staff and students are $12 each, then $10 for every additional concert/workshop booked in the year. More information & bookings at wayjo.com/education/concert-for-schools/
