Vegas, Baby!

The Rat Pack. Tom Jones. Elvis. Louis Prima.

It’s the swinging sounds of the ultra-lounge. Hipsters, mobsters, cool cats and brassy dames. WAYJO’s annual Astor Theatre show is always a hit with audiences, and Vegas, Baby! will be the coolest night in town.

Dress up in your finest, hop back in time a few decades, but not too far, and step out like a big spender.

It’s Vegas, Baby!

Vegas, Baby! is supported by the City of Stirling Cultural Development Fund.

WAYJO Bring Big Band Vegas to The Astor Theatre

For one night only, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) present a swinging night of big-band jazz at the Astor Theatre!

Celebrate all that is Vegas with not one but two 18-piece jazz bands, in a superb Art Deco venue that will resonate with the big band sound, Saturday June 1st.

The Rat Pack, Tom Jones, Elvis. Louis Prima... enjoy the swinging sounds of the ultra-lounge performed live on stage by one of Australia’s premiere jazz orchestras, with incredible performers that just happen to be aged 25 or under!

"This year Vegas Baby! will send you back to an era of sophistication and decadence when the music of Sinatra, Ella, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and the Count Basie Orchestra were in their prime.” WAYJO artistic director and Wednesday Night Orchestra’s conductor Mace Francis.

WAYJO are grateful for the support received every year from all of the staff at the Astor Theatre. City of Stirling also supports the event through its Cultural Development fund.

About WAYJO

WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) is WA's leading jazz big band and the premier youth jazz orchestra in Australia. Each year, we engage about 100 emerging and established artists and perform in front of more than 30,000 people across Western Australia.

New programming has seen WAYJO’s ticketed audiences grow from 1,500 in 2016 to over 8,000 in 2018.

WAYJO is a not-for-profit organisation and has grown from supporting a single 18-piece ensemble to the three orchestras it has today – the Monday Night Orchestra, Tuesday Night Orchestra and the Wednesday Night Orchestra. Since 1983, WAYJO has nurtured outstanding young musicians, aged between 14 and 25 years, through programs designed to develop life skills like commitment, collaboration and self-confidence.

WAYJO alumni have gone on to successful careers in the music industry locally, nationally and internationally, and continue to contribute to the vibrancy and diversity of Australian culture.

For more information, including concerts, bookings, workshops and auditions, head to wayjo.com

Jazz at The Maj: The Great American Songbook

WAYJO kicks off 2019 with a toe tapping, joyous concert featuring the songs from The Great American Songbook.

After the sell-out shows Ladies Sing the Blues in 2018, the WAYJO vocalists will bring their talents to tunes made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Billie Holiday, as composed by Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Berlin, Porter and more.

The Great American Songbook will be the perfect introduction to the 2019 program, so bring your family and friends along to what will be the first hit show of the year.

WAYJO Stars to Shine Next Month at the Quarry

WAYJO Stars to Shine Next Month at the Quarry

Western Australia’s leading jazz big band – WAYJO – presents a night of jazz under the stars at the Quarry Amphitheatre next month.

They will perform jazz classics by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington plus hits from the 1960 album, The Nutcracker Suite, on 22 and 23 November.

WAYJO General Manager Simon Keen said a night at the Quarry in late November was the perfect way to welcome the summer season.

“Our Jazz Under the Stars program is one of our most popular performances each year and we know that audiences will love hearing some of Duke Ellington’s best work plus classics like ‘Sugar Rum Cherry’ and ‘Dance of the Floreadores’,” he said.

“Two of our popular orchestras – the Monday Night Orchestra and the Tuesday Night Orchestra – will perform Ellington classics, while our Wednesday Night Orchestra will showcase Ellington’s jazz interpretations of The Nutcracker.”

Mr Keen said Jazz Under the Stars would be WAYJO’s 2018 season finale.

“It’s been a big year for WAYJO. We have curated around 100 ticketed performances, with attendance expected to reach over 8,000 across the ticketed program, tremendous growth from the approximately 1,600 who attended our 2016 season.”

WAYJO will also be distributing their 2019 season brochure, launching the program at the concerts.

Tickets to Jazz Under the Stars Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker are available from ticketmaster.com.au
