In keeping with WAYJO’s commitment to spotlighting local talent, WAYJO is thrilled that award-winning violinist Emily Gelineau will be joining the Wednesday Night Orchestra (WNO) as guest artist. Emily returned to Perth after graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Known for her eclectic musical style, Emily seamlessly blends genres — from jazz and country to pop, rock, and world styles such as French and Brazilian music.

Ahead of the upcoming concert at the Como Theatre on Friday, 27 June, Artistic Director and WNO Musical Director Gemma Farrell shares insights into how this performance bridges generations, styles, and genres.

Is this the first time Emily has performed with WAYJO? What makes this collaboration so special?
This marks Emily’s debut collaboration with WAYJO, and we’re incredibly excited to have her on board. Not only is she a virtuosic and versatile jazz violinist, but Emily will also be showcasing her vocal talents on the night — adding yet another layer of richness to the performance.

What can the audience expect to hear on the night?
We’re excited to present special arrangements of works by WAYJO alumni and contemporary composers such as Chelsea McBride and Sarah McKenzie, alongside Brazilian and Latin-inspired pieces that speak to Emily’s love of those sounds. Several charts have been arranged or adapted specifically for this collaboration, showcasing Emily’s versatility on the violin.

The setlist features traditional swing numbers like Swinging Shepherd Blues and Tea for Two, emotionally rich compositions like God Only Knows and Daughters, and rhythmically adventurous fusion works such as Jazz Mayday São Paulo and Nuevo Panalivio.

From Brazilian rhythms to groove-based modern jazz —the program flows effortlessly across genres and eras.

What will the Wednesday Night Orchestra gain from this collaboration?
This project is an incredible learning opportunity for the members of WAYJO’s Wednesday Night Orchestra (WNO). They’ll be challenged to adapt to a wide range of styles — swing, Latin jazz, fusion, and contemporary big band — while learning how to accompany a dynamic soloist like Emily.

It’s also a chance to play rarely programmed charts, including modern compositions and some pieces with really distinctive voicings and textures — perfect for young musicians eager to grow.

This concert will be the first jazz performance at the newly restored Como Theatre. What makes this venue so exciting?
The show will be held at the newly reopened Como Theatre, which has been closed since 2021 — making this a celebration of live music’s return to a beloved cultural space. To bring jazz back to this iconic venue with a show as dynamic as this one is truly special. There’s an intimacy to the space that’s ideal for jazz — every note feels close, and the audience is part of the experience.
