What do you get when you bring Helpmann Award winning performers, one of Perth’s finest theatrical minds, a world-leading jazz composer and arranger, and 12 young musicians together? A riotous and fast-paced performance destined to be the hit of Fringe World.

Slap is a clown and Tickle is his gimp. When they take to the stage to perform their variety show at Fringe World, it is something they have done a thousand times before. Neither of them expects this will be their last show together. Backed by a 12-piece WAYJO orchestra, iOTA takes on the multiple roles of the cast of the Slap and Tickle Variety Show, all performed by his character Slap, while Tickle – the hard working, trouble-shooting gimp – rolls with the punches and dreams of a better life.

Under the direction of Mel Cantwell (former Artistic Director, Perth Theatre Company) and musical direction of Mace Francis, Slap and Tickle will receive its world premiere in the Studio Underground at the State Theatre Centre of WA.

Slap and Tickle is an hilariously adult and unexpectedly moving exploration of the variety format, enduring talent and the ties that bind.

Ella Fitzgerald. Billie Holiday. Sarah Vaughan. The greatest vocalists of jazz have left indelible marks on the music of the 20th Century and beyond.

Here at WAYJO we believe that our vocalists are up to the challenge of tackling the most beloved songs as performed by the greatest jazz vocalists of history, and they’ll be joined on stage by some of Perth’s leading singers, including Libby Hammer, Sarah Ramsey and Victoria Newton.

We dare you not to hum or sing along as our amazing vocal talents bring swing and soul to the sound of big bands.

Debuting in 2017, WAYJO’s Jazz for Juniors concerts enraptured young and old audiences alike. We couldn’t keep up with demand, adding new shows throughout the year and selling out each time. So of course we’re bringing Jazz for Juniors back in 2018.

Designed for under 7 year olds, each school holiday we focus on different sections of the jazz orchestra, from brass to saxophone and rhythm sections.

We have child friendly instruments for the kids to try out, and interactive songs led by our WAYJO band members.

Bring the kids along for some school holiday fun that will open their eyes (and ears) to a whole new world.
