Message from the Artistic Director

We step into 2025 with fresh energy, three new bands, and an incredible year of music ahead. Now in our 42nd year, WAYJO continues to be a driving force in shaping the future of jazz in Western Australia, and I am extremely honoured to have been appointed Artistic Director. I never imagined, back when I was a young musician in WAYJO, that I would one day be leading this remarkable organisation.

I’m thrilled to be working with such an extraordinary group of young musicians, who are the future of jazz in WA. I’m particularly excited to work alongside WAYJO’s Board and dedicated staff to ensure WAYJO becomes an even more diverse and inclusive organisation—one that reflects and contributes to a richer, more dynamic Perth jazz scene.

A huge thank you goes to our artistic staff – Monday Night Orchestra Musical Director Ricki Malet, Tuesday Night Orchestra Musical Director Marty Pervan, WAYJO NC Program Coordinator Jess Herbert – who have worked tirelessly to audition the new bands, run a fantastic WAYJO camp, and set us up for an incredible musical year ahead.

Special thanks also to our General Manager Monique Douglas , Operations Co-ordinator Lucy Iffla and Bookkeeper Amanda Luke for all their efforts behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs smoothly. The year has already started on a high note, with the Wednesday Night Orchestra delivering a standout performance at the Perth Festival—an exciting first step in what promises to be a year full of memorable moments.

I’m also delighted to welcome Bob Tweedie to the WAYJO team this year as our new Assistant Musical Director for 2025. Many will know Bob from his time playing trumpet and keyboard with our bands, and from his fantastic compositions that have been performed by WAYJO. Having taught Bob when I first started lecturing at WAAPA in 2018, I am particularly proud to see him stepping into this leadership role. His deep understanding of the organisation, his talent as a musician and composer, and his passion for jazz make him a wonderful addition to our artistic team.

In 2025, our program will shine a spotlight on the incredible talent we have right here in WA—both emerging and established. We are committed to celebrating and nurturing local artists, providing our young musicians with inspiring role models and invaluable opportunities to learn, perform, and grow.

WAYJO has a rich history of fostering the next generation of jazz talent, and I am honoured to build upon this legacy. I can’t wait to see where this year takes us and to share this incredible journey with our musicians and audiences alike.
