One of Perth’s lost treasures, for over 50 years the Embassy Ballroom hosted hundreds of performances by the cream of WA’s entertainers and performers, as well as sublime international guest artists.
Swinging at the Embassy Ballroom, on the main stage of His Majesty’s Theatre Friday 27 March, will whisk you back to a bygone era of style and glamour with the most beloved big band jazz music of its time.
Special guest vocalists Victoria Newton and Anita Wardell join all three of WAYJO’s famed orchestras at His Majesty’s Theatre to croon, swing and melt your heart. These two vocalists, who were singing together in London during the 1990s, will entertain you with their style, vocal virtuosity and humour.
Victoria Newton states “I am so looking forward to the ‘Swinging at the Embassy Ballroom’ show because I get to work with the phenomenon that is WAYJO. The bands are so brilliant and it’s always such a joy to sing with their magnificent sound and swinging grooves behind you!”

WAYJO Announces 2020 Season with an All-Australian Guest Artist Program
The West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) launches its 2020 season, Homegrown, celebrating the depth of talent Australia has produced in the jazz scene, with a suite of Australian guest artists in an exciting program.
After a 2019 focus on the birthplace of jazz, the USA, featuring numerous sell-out performances, WAYJO brings a stunning array of Australian artists from interstate and abroad to perform with the company’s three 18-piece jazz big bands. As part of the Homegrown season, WAYJO have also commissioned a number of new compositions, presenting the World Premiere of nearly three hours of new music.
WAYJO recognises the importance of showcasing Australian musicians and the successes of over 35 years of WAYJO alumni on the Australian and international scenes. Our vision to “build the future of Australian jazz” is the cornerstone rationale behind the 2020 program, offering outstanding opportunities for young Western Australian musicians and providing WAYJO’s growing audience with fresh perspectives and experiences.
Homegrown kicks off with a tribute to one of Perth’s legendary and much missed venues, with Swinging at the Embassy Ballroom. From 1928 to 1982, the Embassy hosted many of Perth’s swinging jazz legends as well as artists from across the ocean, and WAYJO will remind nostalgic audiences of the music of those years on the main stage at His Majesty’s Theatre. Featuring all three of WAYJO’s big bands and guest vocalists Anita Wardell & Victoria Newton this will be a concert event for young and old alike.
Jazz at The Maj returns from May to October, featuring stunning concerts in the beautifully intimate Downstairs at The Maj. The season begins in May with WAYJO welcoming vocalist Kristin Berardi (Qld) in Polka Dots and Moonbeams. Kristin wowed Perthaudiences at the 2019 Perth International Jazz Festival with her sensuous voice and joins the WAYJO Tuesday Night Orchestra.
In June, WAYJO is proud to present a true legend of Australian jazz, pianist Judy Bailey (NSW) to perform My Favourite Things. A force of nature, Judy joins the WAYJO Wednesday Night Orchestra, Perth’s premiere big band in performing new jazz composition, for two unmissable concerts.
July sees WAYJO debuting our first major commissions for 2020. WAYJO alumni Andrew Murray (Vic) joins Artistic Director Dr Mace Francis to present Come Together. For the first time, the WAYJO MinterEllison Monday Night Orchestra will perform works composed specifically for this ensemble, a rare challenge for the most junior WAYJO band. However, with well-known music like The Beatles’ “Come Together” receiving a whole new jazz arrangement audiences are sure to be surprised and enchanted in this World Premiere event.
One of WAYJO’s recent success stories, Alana Macpherson, alumna and former WAYJO Assistant Music Director, joins WAYJO in September for the second major commission of the year, All or Nothing At All. Alana, 2018 WAM Award winner as Best Brass/String/Woodwind Instrumentalist, studies her Masters of Jazz Composition at the MUG University of Music and Performing Arts, Austria, and brings her saxophone and composing skills to bear with the Wednesday Night Orchestra.
Toshi Clinch (Vic) offers his unique arrangements of classic Hollywood films to WAYJO in October to close out the Jazz at The Maj season with A Golden Age of Jazz on Film. Following the success of WAYJO’s 2019 concerts, Jazz at the Movies, these reimagined works of Quincy Jones, John Williams and more will be a family favourite.
WAYJO’s guest artist program is proudly supported by the Minderoo Foundation in their second year of partnership with WAYJO.
Punctuating the Homegrown season will be the return of the King Street Corner Pocket Jazz Festival in 2020. Showcasing the depth of talent in Western Australia, over 50 performances by the state’s emerging and established jazz acts will feature across the three days of the Festival. From big band to smaller intimate ensembles and solo musicians, King Street Corner Pocket is the most accessible and fun way to see multiple acts in the same night in easy walking distance. WAYJO will also present The Debut Collection during the Festival, featuring commissioned works from the company’s Composer-in-Residence program. King Street Corner Pocket is supported by the City of Perth.
The sell-out Jazz for Juniors returns as part of WAYJO’s ongoing Act-Belong-Commit education program, which also features dedicated schools concerts Downstairs at The Maj, and South-West and Geraldton Regional Tours.
Homegrown continues WAYJO’s focus on supporting the growth of jazz in the State and furthering the representation of female artists, with five of the seven guest artists programmed outstanding women in the field.
WAYJO’s 2019 season saw continued audience growth, with the Jazz at the Maj season reaching 92% of ticketed capacity, a 10% increase in audiences at Corner Pocket, and box office targets exceeded by 12%.
WAYJO is the small company that has WA’s arts community buzzing, with an exciting 2020 on the horizon.

In addition to reprising this repertoire we will also be performing a few new pieces featuring some Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald & Basie classics.

The Artemis Project 2019
WAYJO's Young Women in Jazz Program Leader Gemma Farrell presents the Artemis Project - a new platform for Perth’s leading female jazz artists.
Showcasing music by Australia’s great female composers and arrangers, the Artemis Orchestra, joined by some of WA Youth Jazz Orchestra's emerging female performers, will open your ears to fresh new sounds.
We briefly spoke to Gemma ahead of the upcoming show, Saturday 19 October, at the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth.
Why/when did you start Artemis Orchestra?
I formed the Artemis Orchestra in 2017. I was preparing for that year's Young Women in Jazz workshops with Kate Pass, Talya Valenti and Alana Macpherson, three phenomenally talented jazz musicians and composers. I was reflecting on the work we do for the workshops, how much I enjoy working with these women, and how there is not enough opportunity to showcase the music of the incredible female jazz musicians we have in Perth. It was also the height of the #metoo era, so I wanted to create a safe space for women to make music together, and for their work as performing musicians and composers to be celebrated. I also think a lot about my own students when I put projects together. Normally, when you go out to see a big band in Perth, you see a band full of straight, white, able bodied men, and maybe a few women. I wanted to create a more diverse band so that all of my students could look at the band and think "yeah, I could do that one day." Most Perth boys have that already, but unfortunately I think with the way things are at the moment, a young girl is likely to look at your average Perth big band and think "wow, it's really hard to be a women in jazz." It's not that we don't have the talent either, as you will see from our gig, but it's just that no one else is shining a light on it.
Why did you call the ensemble Artemis?
I was uncomfortable with the idea of having the word "women" in the title, because we're not exclusive. As much as the project does showcase the work of Australian women, we don't have anywhere near as many women as men in the Perth jazz scene, so if we need the help of men I want them to feel welcome (in this concert we have two lovely men joining us). I would also warmly welcome any transgender or non-binary band members. I wanted to go for a Greek name to salute our Sydney friends, the Sirens big band, who did this a long time before we did. Eventually I read about Artemis, the goddess of hunting, wild animals, childbirth and protector of young women. The last part in particular seemed very apt, and I also liked the fact that there was the word "Art" in there as well.
Who's performing?
The band for the Saturday concert is made up of women who are professionals playing in the Artemis Orchestra, women who play with Artemis regularly but are also members of WAYJO, and WAYJO members. In putting the band together, I offered the opportunity to all the female members of WAYJO. When I found out how many were available, I looked at the gaps we had and hired members of Artemis to fill those gaps. We had two more gaps after that, there were no female drummers in WAYJO and Artemis' regular drummer was unavailable. We also needed another trombonist, and so to fill those gaps, we have the amazing Julius Rogers and Alex Parkinson from WAYJO's WNO joining us.

What might audience members most enjoy about this show?
We are performing some incredible compositions which they will likely have never heard before, some composed by members of the band including Candice Susnjar and Kate Pass. Everyone who wants to have a go at soloing is soloing. It's a going to be a real showcase of home grown talent. There a lots of powerful numbers, some Latin charts (my personal favourite thing is whenever Imogen whips out her triangle), it's two sets of bangers.
I'm so grateful to WAYJO for agreeing to do this once a year and I hope to see as many people there supporting this initiative as possible.
WAYJO Welcomes Japanese Exchange Musicians
SHOWAYJO is a special collaboration between musicians from the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) in Perth, Western Australia and exchange partners from the Showa University of Music in Kawasaki, Japan.
These two groups come together to form a cross cultural big band playing classic big band repertoire as well as premiering a special new composition created by all the band members. WAYJO’s Ricki Malet (trumpet) and Showa University’s Masa Ikeda (trombone) will also share the stage with these young musicians.
Presented by WAYJO, and proudly supported by North West Shelf Gas over the past 5 years, this Cultural Exchange Through Music project joins talented performers across the hemispheres in a way the transcends linguistic boundaries.

Discover Award Winning Jazz at King Street Corner Pocket
King Street Corner Pocket Jazz Festival returns to warm the winter city with hot jazz, 4-6 July.
This year’s WAM Song of the Year (SOTY) Award nominees have been announced, with Jazz musician Ben Matthews in the leader’s pack with two nominations in Jazz & World, plus the Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble in the World category.
All Jazz nominees, and many more, can be experienced live at King Street Corner Pocket Festival.
Ben Matthews performs Saturday 6th July with Holli Scott and the Rush Hour Circus at Prince Lane - 6.00pm, in a show transporting you to another age and place, drawing from artists such as Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone. Holli Scott and Ben Matthewsalso present a curated show of original music and arranged jazz standards at Cheeky Sparrow - 8.30pm.
Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group is also a hot festival and SOTY awards favourite. This lively 7-piece perform with guest vocalist Nico Bahamonde, presenting a tribute to the ground-breaking album "Soul of Black Peru" compiled by David Byrne (Talking Heads) at the Sewing Room on Thursday 4th July, 7.00pm. Susnjar also drums at the festival with Perth Wind and Fire, Helium, Holli Scott & the Rush Hour Circus, TRISK, and Kohesia Ensemble.
Piano and drum duo Imogen Thomson / Austin Salisbury present Mejadra, a melting pot of modern Jazz and Afro-Cuban inspired originals at the InterContinental Perth City Centre, Thursday 4th of July, 6.00pm.
Nick Abbey performs on bass in TRISK, an instrumental group influenced by hip-hop, jazz, R&B, pop, and world. TRISK perform in the Barre Café at His Majesty’s Theatre, Thursday 4th July, 5.30pm. Nick also appears with the Anea Duratovic Quintet.
Multi-instrumentalist Tim Newhouse presents Synken (the Danish word for immersion) at the Dress Circle Bar at His Majesty’s Theatre, Thursday 4th July, 7.00pm.
Led by double bassist Kate Pass, Kohesia Ensemble present Kate’s original compositions influenced by her passion for both jazz and Persian music. Explore unusual time structures, microtonal melodies and exotic instruments at Prince Lane Glamour Bar, Saturday 6th July, 7.30pm. You can also catch Kate with Phoebus Cartel and the Perth Cabaret Collective.
2017-18 SOTY Jazz award winner Harry Mitchell also makes festival appearances on keys with The Greig-Kelly Quintet, Helium, Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group, and Trio Trio.

King St Corner Pocket Jazz Festival 2019 Announced
WAYJO’s extraordinary jazz hit of 2018 – the King Street Corner Pocket Jazz Festival – returns to the city this July.
Boasting 55 shows and more than 200 performers, the festival showcases WA’s top emerging and established jazz musicians from 4-6 July 2019.
City venues include His Majesty’s Theatre, The Sewing Room, the InterContinental Perth City Centre Hotel, Cheeky Sparrow and Prince Lane.
WAYJO General Manger Simon Keen said it was exciting to be staging the second King Street Corner Pocket Festival.
“Last year’s debut festival was a huge success and this year we’ve got more shows plus new venues such as Cheeky Sparrow and Prince Lane,” he said.
“King Street Corner Pocket Festival has something for everyone with big band jazz, intimate duos and trios, and some of the best emerging jazz artists Perth has to offer.
Featured artists include WAYJO’s popular Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Night Orchestras plus fabulous locals such as up and comers Demon Days, Fat Sparrow’s final ever gig, and an album launch from Harry Mitchell’s Trio.

About WAYJO
WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) is WA's leading jazz big band and the premier youth jazz orchestra in Australia. Each year, we engage about 100 emerging and established artists and perform in front of more than 30,000 people across Western Australia.
New programming has seen WAYJO’s ticketed audiences grow from 1,500 in 2016 to over 8,000 in 2018.
WAYJO is a not-for-profit organisation and has grown from supporting a single 18-piece ensemble to the three orchestras it has today – the Monday Night Orchestra, Tuesday Night Orchestra and the Wednesday Night Orchestra. Since 1983, WAYJO has nurtured outstanding young musicians, aged between 14 and 25 years, through programs designed to develop life skills like commitment, collaboration and self-confidence.
WAYJO alumni have gone on to successful careers in the music industry locally, nationally and internationally, and continue to contribute to the vibrancy and diversity of Australian culture.

WAYJO MNO South West Tour 2019
WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) presents big-band jazz in Mandurah and Albany, each for one night only!
The WAYJO Monday Night Orchestra (MNO) bring toe-tapping jazz stylings as part of their 2019 Act-Belong-Commit South West Regional Tour this May.
The MNO bring their recently sold-out Perth show of New Orleans Big Band Jazz to Morning Melodies at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, May 13th. Join WAYJO as their young musicians take you back to the origins of jazz in a concert of fun filled music, which includes a morning tea from 10.00am.
This 18-piece jazz orchestra, directed by nationally acclaimed trumpeter Ricki Malet, will also visit Albany Entertainment Centre, May 15th.
The MNO play repertoire inspired by the big bands of the 1930s to the 1960s, led by such icons as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton.
Enjoy grooving classic big band classics, performed by one of Australia’s leading youth jazz orchestra’s that has been described as one of the country’s cultural gems!
